Descripción

Circular is a partial renovation project of a residence located in a multifamily building in Palma.

The intervention focuses on the living room, dining area, kitchen, laundry, and hallways, with the aim of visually and physically connecting the spaces while respecting the flow of the original layout.

The residence had excessive compartmentalization, especially between the living room, kitchen, and dining area. Additionally, the presence of translucent glass in the exterior gallery significantly limited the entry of natural light.

The first step involves removing the unnecessary partitions (Diagram 1) and taking down the exterior enclosure of the laundry area. This allows southeast light to enter the interior of the house (Diagram 2).

With a completely open layout, furniture elements are designed to restore the original circulation flow (Diagrams 3 and 4). The living room furniture integrates various functions: it houses the original fireplace, a bookshelf, the HVAC equipment, and at the same time defines the passage between the entrance and the living room.

In the center, an island accommodates part of the kitchen, the dining area, and sliding panels that allow this zone to be separated from the more private part of the house: the bedrooms and the bathroom. The furniture is completed with kitchen and laundry modules designed to reuse existing appliances and enhance the new layout.

When developing the proposal, the premise was to preserve the original terrazzo, replacing or repairing only the sections necessary for the new layout. The off-white color of the furniture matches the tone of the terrazzo, and the rounded shape of the elements promotes a smooth and pleasant flow.

“Circular,” as an adjective, refers to the geometric shape of a circle; and as a verb, it allows movement back and forth in all directions.
